DARTH MAUL replies.
Replied to by Darth Maul, with a rebuttal from Obi-Wan Kenobi.
The letter
About fourteen standard months ago I transferred my brother-in-law Dorn 4,200 credits so he wouldn't lose the repulsor-hauler his salvage-and-repair trade depends on — his main contractor had slashed his hours and he was about to forfeit it. He swore he'd repay inside half a year, we clasped hands on it, and I still have the original transfer logged in my datapad. Since then I've raised it twice — once lightly over a meal, once in a plain message — and both times he waved it off: "I'm nearly there, work's coming back." Not one credit has moved. My wife — his sister — knows I made the loan, but not that it has completely stalled, and I dread that pressing it will either detonate her bond with him or turn her against me for "making things strange." This wasn't a trifle; it was nearly all of our emergency reserve. I can't decide whether to send Dorn formal repayment terms in writing, go to my wife first, or simply swallow the loss and accept that loans between kin never come back.
Darth Maul replies
Four thousand two hundred credits. Most of what stood between your family and ruin. Hear me before you let anyone — yourself included — file it under "nearly nothing." It was not nothing. He took it, and he is counting on your discomfort to keep it. That is the whole of his strategy. He has read you, and decided you will swallow it sooner than make it strange.
You taught him that. Twice you raised it softly, over a meal, in a careful message — and twice you let his fog answer for him. The quiet one is a weapon only when the quiet is chosen. Yours has been mistaken for surrender.
So stop performing patience and start practicing it. One record, in writing, plain and unanswerable: the sum, the date he swore, the new terms. No pleading. No raised voice — the ones who raise their voice have already lost the room. State it once. Then wait, and watch what he does with the silence.
But I will give you the one mercy I have. I built an entire life out of a single wound and called it purpose. Do not. Make the record. Hold the line. If the credits never come, let it be a scar you carry — not the thing you become.

Obi-Wan Kenobi weighs in
Maul, you've answered a different letter — the one where the man is alone. He isn't. There's a wife in that room he's been hiding from, and that, not Dorn, is the wound that festers.
I once told myself comforting things about someone I loved rather than say the hard thing aloud. It cost me everything. So: go to your wife first — not to win, to stop the secret. A debt survives being spoken of. A marriage rarely survives discovering the silence.
The written terms can wait a week. The honesty cannot. Patience, yes — but patience and concealment are not the same creature.
